The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of the region's health infrastructure, exacerbating inequalities in access to health services, with a profound impact on the lives of women, which was reflected in excess maternal mortality and the deepening of inequities in access to essential sexual and reproductive health services. In the years before the pandemic, the maternal mortality ratio in the Americas had stagnated, a result of the multiple barriers to access to health and quality care that women and adolescents face in the Region.
